The CPL is pleased to announce the list of all past CPL 1v1 World Champions. The list for the CPL 1v1 World Champions dates back to 1997, when the CPL officially began hosting 1v1 tournaments with Quake.
Tom "gollum" Dawson won the very first FRAG tournament hosted by the CPL. Dan "Rix" Hammans took the 1998 World Champion title by winning both tournaments featuring both Quake I and Quake II, our first multi-game champion. 1999 featured the emergence of Mark "Wombat" Larsen, who took the World Champion title by winning Ground Zero, the CPL’s first event in New York City as well as taking 2nd place at FRAG 3 in Dallas.
Year 2000 began the reign of Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel, the only player with four CPL 1v1 World Championship titles to his name. By winning the Dallas Razer CPL event as well as a CPL Europe event, Johnathan was given the title over John "Zero4" Hill, who won the CPL Babbages event that year. Johnathan would continue his reign by winning the only automobile given away by the CPL, for his win of the Aliens vs Predator 2 tournament at the CPL World Championships in 2001. The next year, 2002, would feature only one 1v1 tournament. Johnathan showed his diversity and his ability to adapt by winning an unprecedented third World Championship title in Unreal Tournament 2003, by beating out Caleb "Cpense" Pense.
While there were no official events for a 1v1 World Champion to be crowned in 2003, 2004 brought forth someone who has become Fatal1ty’s top challenger, Sander "Vo0" Kaasjager. Vo0 would show his dominance in Painkiller by taking the title from Fatal1ty during both events in 2004. During 2005, the winner of the world Champion title was the hardest to determine as Sander "Vo0" Kaasjager managed to take home an incredible five 1st place finishes from the CPL’s $1,000,000 World Tour. Johnathan, after winning the USA World Tour stop, managed to defeat him for the World Championship title by beating Vo0 in the New York City finals after rising from the lower brackets.
With the return of Quake 3 to the CPL, we should see some classic match ups featuring some of the world’s best players to determine the 2006 1v1 World Champion.
