The Cyberathlete Professional League® (CPL), the world’s most recognized brand in professional videogame tournaments, today announced the creation of project Severity, a new multiplayer game developed for both PC and console systems.

Severity is a multiplayer first person shooter (FPS) focusing on team-versus-team and one-versus-one play modes. Additionally, the game offers unprecedented support for gamers worldwide playing in online and live competitions both casually and professionally.

“Severity will be the first videogame conceived from the ground up to ensure the growth and appeal of multiplayer game competitions worldwide,” said Tom Mustaine, Director of Game Development at the CPL’s new studio.

Severity is built on technology created by developer id Software™ and includes enhanced tournament support, spectator modes, as well as detailed player and tournament statistics tracking. By leveraging the enthusiastic community and practical experiences of the CPL, Severity is uniquely positioned to set new standards while raising the bar for competitive multiplayer games.

According to Mr. Mustaine, former studio director of Dallas-based Ritual Entertainment, the league expects to begin testing the new game with members of the video-gaming community before the end of 2007.

Severity will be released as a playable demo in early 2007 with the full release mid 2008, and will feature 1v1 and 5v5 game types and be based off of the Quake 3 engine. From release of the demo until the finished product the Severity team will be taking input from top eSports teams as well as the community to hopefully make a great competitve game. The CPL has announced that there will be no restrictions for Severity, meaning that any LAN or tournament can use it without having to license it from CPL.

Last month the CPL announced all past CPL one-versus-one World Champions. Now, the CPL is pleased to announce all of the Counter-Strike World Champions. The list of Counter-Strike Champions dates back to 2000, when the CPL officially began hosting team-based tournaments with Counter-Strike.

The CPL’s first official Counter-Strike tournament was hosted at the Babbage’s CPL Event in 2000. The Swedish team e9 won this first and only CS event of the year, crowning them the 2000 CPL Counter-Strike Champions.

In 2001, Team X3 won the $30,000 Speakeasy CPL Event and the Counter-Strike Invitational, however Ninjas in Pyjamas from Sweden, in what is regarded today as one of the greatest Counter-Strike matches of all time, defeated Team X3 in the $150,000 CPL World Championship Event and were crowned the 2001 CPL Counter-Strike Champions.

Starting in 2002 team Schroet Kommando, won the CPL World Championship Event in 2001 and began an impressive win streak. The Swedish powerhouse won three events in two years to become the CPL Counter-Strike Champions for 2002 and 2003.

At the Extreme Winter Championships in 2004, Team NoA won the Counter-Strike tournament securing their role as the Champions for 2004. In 2005, SK Gaming reclaimed the title by winning both the CPL Extreme Summer Championships and the CPL Winter Championships, and became the CPL Counter-Strike Champions for 2005.

At the upcoming Championship Finals, which take place December 16-20, the CPL will once again crown another Counter-Strike World Champion.

Dan "Rix" Hammans took the 1998 World Champion title by winning both tournaments featuring both Quake I and Quake II, our first multi-game champion. 1999 featured the emergence of Mark "Wombat" Larsen, who took the World Champion title by winning Ground Zero, the CPL's first event in New York City as well as taking 2nd place at FRAG 3 in Dallas.

The CPL is pleased to announce the list of all past CPL 1v1 World Champions. The list for the CPL 1v1 World Champions dates back to 1997, when the CPL officially began hosting 1v1 tournaments with Quake.

Tom "gollum" Dawson won the very first FRAG tournament hosted by the CPL. Dan "Rix" Hammans took the 1998 World Champion title by winning both tournaments featuring both Quake I and Quake II, our first multi-game champion. 1999 featured the emergence of Mark "Wombat" Larsen, who took the World Champion title by winning Ground Zero, the CPL’s first event in New York City as well as taking 2nd place at FRAG 3 in Dallas.

Year 2000 began the reign of Johnathan "Fatal1ty" Wendel, the only player with four CPL 1v1 World Championship titles to his name. By winning the Dallas Razer CPL event as well as a CPL Europe event, Johnathan was given the title over John "Zero4" Hill, who won the CPL Babbages event that year. Johnathan would continue his reign by winning the only automobile given away by the CPL, for his win of the Aliens vs Predator 2 tournament at the CPL World Championships in 2001. The next year, 2002, would feature only one 1v1 tournament. Johnathan showed his diversity and his ability to adapt by winning an unprecedented third World Championship title in Unreal Tournament 2003, by beating out Caleb "Cpense" Pense.

While there were no official events for a 1v1 World Champion to be crowned in 2003, 2004 brought forth someone who has become Fatal1ty’s top challenger, Sander "Vo0" Kaasjager. Vo0 would show his dominance in Painkiller by taking the title from Fatal1ty during both events in 2004. During 2005, the winner of the world Champion title was the hardest to determine as Sander "Vo0" Kaasjager managed to take home an incredible five 1st place finishes from the CPL’s $1,000,000 World Tour. Johnathan, after winning the USA World Tour stop, managed to defeat him for the World Championship title by beating Vo0 in the New York City finals after rising from the lower brackets.

With the return of Quake 3 to the CPL, we should see some classic match ups featuring some of the world’s best players to determine the 2006 1v1 World Champion.

The online registration for the CPL 2006 Championship Finals, has been launched at https://www.thecpl.com/register/.

For one week, only competitors participating in the two official PC tournaments (Quake 3 1v1 and CS 1.6 Team) are able to register online for the Championship Finals. The BYOC area will be relatively small, therefore competitors bringing practice computers to the event must select "BYOC" during the registration to avoid issues during check-in.

The “"”BYOC-only”"” registration (for registrants bringing their computers to the event but not participating in any official tournaments) will open Thursday, August 17th, 2006 @ 1:00PM Central. Spectator passes will be available a week later.

Admission is only $30 per person. This is the lowest admission price for a CPL event since 1998! The CPL thanks its primary sponsors: AMD, ATI, Pizza Hut, BenQ, Plantronics, Razer and Insomnia365 for making it possible to offer this special admission price.

The CPL® 2006 Championship Finals will take place Wednesday, December 13 to Sunday, December 17, 2006 at the Hyatt Regency hotel in downtown Dallas.
